The study surveyed 585 mobile app developers and development managers across 9 countries on mobile development projects and processes. So what are the keys to their success? 1. Strong team with required expertise Successful projects have app developers with development experience, strong business and industry expertise. The study found that successful projects are 30% more likely to have a developer with more than 5 years of mobile development experience. Key takeaway, determine how can fill any skills gap, identify additional training needs, and map out career paths for your developers. 2. Flexibility by using cloud-based platforms and APIs Successful projects use both cloud-based platforms and mobile application development platforms heavily. To develop their mobile apps, successful teams are: • 35% likely to use cloud-based platforms • 31% likely to use mobile application development platforms. Key takeaway, you must consider using cloud-based platforms and APIs to increase the development speed. Also use mobile app development platforms to avoid being tied into a specific platform or technology, an issue that slows projects down. 3. Collaboration across the ecosystem Successful projects always maintain close collaboration with the entire ecosystem, from design to quality assurance and to end users. Study respondents as a whole indicated that the number one trait of effective mobile application developers is communication, successful projects have better collaboration with stakeholders and end users. Key takeaway, it’s important to identify developers with strong communication and collaboration skills; you will need to provide the right tools and environment to enhance collaboration throughout the development lifecycle. 4. Innovation using various analytics Successful projects use analytics to improve apps. Projects are 1.6 times more likely to use analytics to enhance the mobile app. Through analysis of user feedback, such as application usage, usage of features and functionalities, and social media feedback, they are able to improve apps, as well as develop new ones. Key takeaway, you can perform testing during the developmental stage of your app and use analytics after the launch, this will identify popular features and functions, so you can continue improving your app. Learning from these successful projects will help your next mobile app development project meet budget, schedule and project objectives.
